American Airport Guide

How to actually enjoy the experience while you wait for your flight

Key Takeaways

Being stuck at an airport waiting for your international flight after a long (but successful!) trade show might seem like a drag. But there’s a silver lining: many of the airports—especially in the United States’ busiest trade show cities—have plenty of ways to pass the time so you can actually enjoy the wait. And here’s even better news: these activities don’t involve working!

Read on for insider tips, things to do, and fun ways to keep yourself occupied as you wait to board the plane home. First, though, here’s some key information to have handy before you even leave for the airport.

Timing

Every airport in the U.S. is a little different, particularly if you’re getting on an international flight or catching a connecting plane at a different airport within the U.S. For the most up-to-date information, it’s always a good idea to download your airline’s app or check the airport’s website for real-time updates.

In general, the busiest U.S. airport times tend to be:

  • International flights: 11am to 3pm and 6pm to 11pm

  • Domestic flights: 11am-2pm and 5pm-7pm

And here’s how early to arrive at your airport to give yourself ample time to check your bags and get through Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints:

  • International flights: at least 3 hours before departure

  • Domestic flights: at least 2 hours before departure

Some of these airports are among the biggest and busiest in the world, so keep in mind that there might be some travel time even after you pass through security, either walking to your terminal or boarding an on-site tram.

Identification

The TSA is strict about passengers’ identification. In most cases, international travelers heading home after a trade show will need a valid passport issued by their country’s government. Beginning in May of 2025, U.S. residents will be required to have a REAL ID to board domestic or international flights.

If you have questions or concerns about the identification you’re traveling with, check the TSA’s acceptable identification list.
